Flavors of Chiang Mai: What we ate during our 4-day stay

I’ve been most excited to visit Chiang Mai since 2017, aside from elephants I also want to witness the lantern festival. Although we did not go there in November in time for Yee Peng Festival, we were there on New Year instead!

One of the things I do to get to know a place is to try their food, food can teach us about a place’s story, struggles, and victories. It’s one of the things we should not miss when traveling to a new place because food has a lot of stories to tell.

The morning we arrived in Chiang Mai, we ate in this small eatery at 44 Singharat Road, just 5minutes from The Common Hostel where we stayed. I loved Hainanese Chicken too much that’s why I want to try Chiang Mai’s Version and of course the famous Khao Soi Noodles.

Khao Soi is made of crispy and soft egg noodles in a creamy, curry-like sauce made with coconut milk typically served with chicken.

One version of history dictates that khao soi first came to Chiang Mai when Chinese Muslims (Yunnanese Muslims) moved to the north of Thailand and lived in Chiang Mai in the late 19th or early 20th century. Another version tells us that khao soi descends from neighbouring Myanmar, bearing similarities to the Burmese egg noodle dish, khao swè,

Khao soi is a dish that mixes the curry from Muslim culture with the noodles from the Chinese.


Khao Man Gai or Thai’s version of Hainanese Chicken is common on Thai menu, each restaurant has their own version in their menu. In our four days stay, I think we ate this 3 times (lol), in the same restaurant because it’s so near our hostel, it’s delicious and affordable for its quality. 

Chicken rice in China and in Singapore, the chicken is often boiled, then doused in a bath of ice water, in Thailand that is usually not the case, especially for street food style khao man gai (ข้าวมันไก่) – instead the chicken is just boiled and left to cool down on its own.


Khai Jiao or Thai Omelette – is served  fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside especially on the edges. I think we ate this more than thrice lol. We loved this so much we ordered this in every restaurant we went to haha.

On our last night in Chiang Mai, we choose to eat in The Good Kitchen, located conveniently inside the Old City (175/6 Rachadamnoen Rd, Phra Sing, Mueang, Chiang Mai). It’s one of the best-rated restaurants in the trip advisor that’s walking distance to our hostel so we tried it. It has a very long line and we waited for 30minutes before we could get a table. Good thing we are only two people, so it’s not that hard for us to score a seat in the restaurant. They have a variety of food on the menu and the good thing is that it’s not that expensive. I also love the ambiance of the place, although it was a bit tight when we were there (New Year rush), the place is still nice and the decorations also suit the occasion. 

Panang Curry, Tom Kha Gai and Thai Omellete with Chicken. For our last night we only spent PHP 350.00 baht, and that’s so sulit!

Tom Kha Gai translates to boiled galangal chicken soupit is a dish coming from the North of Thailand with influence from its neighboring Laos. It’s ingredients includes coconut milk, chicken chunks or shreds, galangal (reddish-brown or pink woody plant related to ginger), lemongrass, garlic, bird’s eye chili peppers, kaffir lime leaves, fish sauce, and shiitake mushrooms.

Panang Curry is sweet, has a taste of rich, creamy coconut flavor with underlying notes of peanut. I love curry so much, that’s why I also want to try the different variations of thai curry.

Panang curry originates from Thailand’s central region, but its popularity quickly spread as people moved to find work elsewhere. The earliest records date back to 1890, and call it phanaeng – https://foodscene.deliveroo.com.au/

Those are the main dishes that we tried in Chiang Mai, we also tried some street food on the night on December 31, while we are walking to Tha Pae Gate to watch the lanterns and kickstart 2020, but I forgot the names hahaha. And of course, we ate a lot of beef noodles, pad thai and mango sticky rice. I think we ate noodles too much while we were in Chiang Mai.

There are a lot of foods I missed trying, so I will definetely be back for food. :*
